NHRA Northwest Nationals in the Books

Hopefully you didn't miss out on the great weekend of racing when the NHRA Lucas Oil series was in town the weekend of September 25th & 26th.

Two of our local racers were shining stars -- Lyle Hood earned himself a Wally by winning the Super Pro bracket, and Dave Martin came close as runner-up in the Pro bracket.  Congratulations to both!!   You made us all proud!!!!!!

My apologies -- I inadvertently left Tracy Bailey off the list of local racers that made us proud.  Tracy took home the Wally in the Sportsman Motorcycle class.  Congratulations Tracy!

National Dragster Challenge & King of the Track

Congratulations to our Wally winners at the National Dragster Challenge on September 19th. Super Pro - Moe Trujillo, Pro - Kory Alby, Sportsman - Ken Stevens, Motorcycle - Nick Kessler.

The King of the Track competition was fierce, with some really close races.  The final round found our 1st and 2nd place Super Pro racers, Jeremy McGee & Lyle Hood, pitted against each other.  Jeremy found himself on top, as a result of Lyle's disappointing .006 red light, and the winner of his second King of the Track Wally.  Congratulations Jeremy!

Cascade Block Friday Night Drag Champions

With the completion of our final Cascade Block Friday Night Drags race of the season, we now know who our 2009 Champions are.  While there was no question who would be the champion in most of the classes, it was possible for the championship to change in the last race for Hot Rod.

Congratulations to our 2009 Champions!

Hot Rod - Tom Lawson
Street DOT - Chuck Herndon
Sport Compact - Keith Brinkman
Motorcycle - Jerry Stinson
High School - Nathan Scherrer
Jr. Dragster - Forrest Angwin

NHRA Div 6 Land of Leaders Challenge

Congratulations to our own Anthony Guida, who is the Sportsman winner of the NHRA Div 6 Land of the Leaders Challenge for 2009.

Great job Anthony!!  You have to do a lot of good racing to win this challenge, in which all NHRA registered racers in division 6 vie for the most points based on their results in each of their home track's selected LOL races.  This is quite an honor for both Anthony and Champion Raceway!

Summit ET Finals

A heartfelt thank-you to all the racers who represented Champion Raceway at the Summit ET Finals in Woodburn.  We had a full team with the exception of 1 sport compact competitor, which was awesome, particularly in these challenging economic times.

While mother nature added some challenges, a great time was had by all.  Champion ended up #8 overall, which was a very respectable showing.

Jim wants all of you to know how much he appreciates your dedication, spirit, and support of Champion Raceway.

3rd ANNUAL NIGHT OF FIRE!

Celebrating Freedom at Champion Raceway, Eagle Point, OR

On July 4th 2009 we celebrated Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…and great time slips!

It was a day for kids of all ages to come together to share our love of horse power. As I read through the entries I realized that this event is growing larger every year. We had entries not only from all over Oregon, but also from California, Washington and Nevada. The racing started early in the morning and went on until late in the evening. We had a lot to get done in one day. This was our 5th race in the 2009 Sunoco Fuel ET Championship Race Series. Mix that up with Jet Cars, Pro Mods, Eliminator West, and the Top Sportsman class, there was hardly time to stop and reload your camera.

The Eliminator West Final was a double break out. The track held some pretty tough competition. Butch Stroupe of Fulton CA was awarded the win light in his ‘92 RED. His competitor was Simon Procopenko of Santa Rosa, CA in an ‘01 RED. Stroupe won at both ends with a 6.28 ET on a 6.30 index and a .038 RT. Procopenko went red with a RT of -.021 and an ET of 6.27.

Pro Mod top spot went to Randy Kay of Reno, NV. Randy’s ‘63 Corvette blasted a 6.31 ET and a ground pounding 229.20 mph. It was side by side racing with Rod Burbage of Anderson CA in his 58 Corvette running 6.37 at 226.54 mph.

Top Sportsman winner was determined after a match up between Will Boxold of Orangevale, CA in a ‘53 Commander and Dan Brandrick of Brentwood, CA in a ‘63 Corvette. Boxold’s Commander carried him on a great pass to win the event. His time slip read an ET of 7.86 on a 7.81 DI and a RT of .041 Brandrick ran a 9.46 on a 7.39 DI with a .074 RT

Double points were awarded to participants of the Bracket Classes. This tightened up the points chase in a couple of classes to make the rest of the season very interesting.

Super Pro: Jeremy McGee of Medford, OR took full advantage of the double points by winning this class in his ‘63 Nova. His opponent was David Chun Jr. of Vancouver WA in a ‘99 RED. Jeremy had a perfect dial in of 10.56 and a RT of .028. Gremlins denied David the win, 15.69 ET, 8.07 DI, -.05 RT.

Pro: Skip Hannon of Rogue River, OR has made it to the final round in his ’68 “Desert Storm Dodge” three out of three races that he has competed in this season. This time he met Dan Holscher of White City, OR in a ‘68 Impala. Dan’s win light went on early as Skip went red by just 1/1000th of a second. The winner had an ET of 10.89 (3rd 10.89 of the day) on a 10.89 dial. Skip ran out the back door with an 11.56 ET on a 11.59 DI.

Sportsman: Ken Stevens of Springfield, OR closed the points gap by taking a hole shot win in his ‘67 Camaro. (ET 13.39, 13.37 DI) David Chun Jr. of Vancouver, WA made it to two finals in two classes in this one day of racing. David lost by a narrow margin with a 15.24 ET, 15.25 DI, in his ‘98 Mark VIII.

Motorcycle: Jerry Stinson of Medford, OR broke out on his ‘05 Hayabusa to give the top money to Jason Sauer of White City, OR riding on a ‘96 Honda.

Sauers: .322 RT, 10.88 DI, 11.10 ET. Stinson: .163 RT, 9.69 DI, 9.67 ET.

JR Dragster: Aaron Frei of Klamath Falls won against great a competitor, Jason Brunelle, of Eagle Point, OR. Aaron’s hole shot win came from an 8.38 on an 8.29 dial, .123 RT. Brunelle ran a 9.01 on a 9.04, .263 RT.

Congratulations to all winners! And Thanks to all competitors! Let’s do it again next year!

But not with out a fight from Lyle Hood of Phoenix, OR (‘68 Camaro) McGhee’s RT of .018, 7.53 ET on a 7.52 dial took the win light over the always hard to beat Hood’s package of .013 RT, 11.07, 11.10 dial.

Pro Final: Dan Stokes of Albany OR (‘65 Satellite) surrendered the win to Kory Alby of Coos Bay, OR (‘63 Nova) when he went red by just two one thousands of a second. The great air came in to break out both racers. Alby: .067 RT, 9.74 ET, 9.78 dial. Stokes: -.002 RT, 10.96 ET, 10.98 dial.

Motorcycle Final: Scotty Pollacheck of Medford, OR (’76 Kawasaki) swept the weekend with a repeat win over Jerry Stinson of Medford, OR (‘05 Hayabusa). Pollacheck’s winning pass was a .056 RT, 8.85 ET on a 8.82 dial. The great air pushed Stinson out the back door with a 9.63 ET on a 9.69 dial.

JR Dragster Final: Jason Brunelle of Eagle Point nailed his dial in of 8.96 to win over Forrest Angwin of Grants Pass OR. Angwin was also bit by the great air. 8.79 ET on an 8.90 dial.

Medford Megabucks Event

BY:  Jim Taylor

Champion Raceway held its first “Medford Megabucks” race on May 29-31.  The three day race was presented by JEG’S and Bi-Mart.  There was $50,000 in prize money and $7000 in JEG’S dollars which made this one of the richest drag races in Oregon.  The $10,000 top prize that was awarded on Saturday was the largest payout to a drag racer in Oregon history.  It attracted racers from all over the west and Canada.  The first day of racing produced some great drag racing that climaxed with a $5000 win check that went to Andy Morris who was able to take out Bill Maness.  Bill was on a great pass when his dragster lost power at the 1000 foot cone.  The next class was our Pro Bracket with a $2000 to win.  Some more great racing took place here and as the field got smaller the win check went to Nick Shepard from Tigard, Oregon over a very tough Paul Comeau from Vancouver, Washington.  With that race day over we started on day two where the checks got a lot bigger.  In our Super Pro category things got hot and heavy again.  Some more very closely contested racing took place all day Saturday, but at the end of the day the richest check ever presented to a drag racer in Oregon went to Mark Colton from North Bend, Or.  Wheel to wheel at the finish was runner up Andy Morris.

In our pro bracket on Saturday some more very close racing took place.  When the win light came on, it was David Chun Jr. from Vancouver, WA taking the $4000 check.  The runner up was Pete Schneider.  Both of these guys were able to wade through a lot of great racers.  That brings us up to day three of this great event presented by JEG’S and Bi-Mart.  By this time all of the racers had a real good base line on the track and the racing was closer than anyone could imagine.

As the day wound down it came time for the finals in Super Pro.  As the win light came on, it was a very happy Don Gatlin from Bakersfield, Ca, taking home the $5000 check.  The runner up check went to Dustin Hentges driving a Morris Racing Dragster.  In the Pro Bracket it came down to two great racers.  One already had a runner-up and would like to add a win to his weekend.  But there was a very tough guy by the name of Kory Alby who stood in his way.  Kory took home the $2000 check with a win light of .0001 over Paul Comeau.  It was the closest race of the weekend and ended the richest drag race in Oregon.  To complement a great weekend all racers and crew were treated to a great BBQ Saturday night sponsored by Food-4-Less market and Champion Raceway.  To our great crew that keep the track in great shape, there were no cones hit, no accidents, and no oil downs through the entire race.  It just couldn’t get any better.  JEG’S bucks were handed out all weekend for Best Win Package, Best Losing Package, First Perfect Light, Hard luck, and bonus money.  I am sure all of the racers and crew were very happy and will be back to do it again next year.

JEG’S Dollars for best package went to: Dennis Robinson, David Myre, Chuck Herndon, Curt Landis, John Whitmore, David Chun Sr, and Pete Scheider. JEG’S dollars for best losing package went to: Jeff Devey, Tom Pappas, John Tobias, Sarah Winiata, Jeremy McGhee, Steve Casner, John Maul, and Melissa Wright.  JEG’S dollars went to John Whitmore and Tom Pappas for perfect lights.  The Hard Luck JEG’S Bucks went to Phil Greer.
